Lucas Lepri BJJ Summer Camp Review 2014

Atlantic Jiu Jitsu host Training Camp, with BJJ World champion, Lucas Lepri.

A 6 day Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Training Camp with black-belt world champion  Lucas Lepri, took place at the CRIB, Rockwood Parade, Sligo, home of Alliance Jiu Jitsu Ireland, and ran from Mon. 4th –  Sat. 9th August.

Such was the interest in the camp over forty BJJ practitioners participated, many of which traveled from across Ireland, from places such as  Donegal, Mayo, Derry, Enniskillen, Dublin and Limerick and some from as far as Manchester. The purpose of the camp was to create an opportunity for Irish Jiu Jitsu practitioners to train for a week with a top BJJ World Champion competitor, and experience what it feels like to train at the highest level. Opportunities such as this are usually reserved only for those who can afford to travel to Brazil or the USA where many of the high level BJJ champions live and train.

Lucas Lepri, is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) black-belt under Elan Santiago.  also a member of World team Champions, Alliance. Lepri is a  World, Pan, Brazilian, and European Champion at Black Belt and trains professionally at the Alliance HQ in Atlanta with renowned BJJ coach Romero “Jacare” Cavalcanti.
The 1st impression you get when you meet the 29 year old Lucas Lepri, is that of a laid back and relaxed young man who takes life in his stride. However, once on the mats and ready to train, Lepri displays his great skills as both an athlete and a teacher, with a great skill in making the complicated aspects of the game seem simple to the attentive student. During the sparring  Lepri never for a moment appeared tired or fatigued regardless of the intensity of the training as he strived to push everyone to their limit.

The Camp consisted of two (1.5 hour) classes per day; Morn & Evening; Monday to Friday and finished with a 3 hour seminar on Saturday 9th August. Each training session was made of three portions; Warm up and Sport specific Conditioning; technique training; and sparring, spending about a half hour on each.

Lucas demonstrated  many important game changing details, the like of which one may spend many years trying to figure out. His attention to detail and knowledge of the art  was outstanding, akin to a having a living BJJ encyclopedia on hand. As for the sparring sessions, day in, day out, Lucas put on a display of skill and athleticism of a world class athlete. Many experienced participants remarked that they “felt like a beginner” when they sparred with Lepri such was his skill level.

Morgan Smyth, instructor at Alliance Jiu Jitsu in Sligo, when asked for his thoughts on Lepri, he remarked; “Lucas Lepri is an excellent instructor, a superb athlete, a true BJJ Legend… and above all… he is the most humble guy with huge respect for everybody he meets. It was a true pleasure to have Lucas Lepri here in Ireland.”

The camp was deemed a success by the organisers having achieved their objective. The feedback from the participants was extremely positive, so much so the Alliance team will be hosting a similar event next year. So stay tuned!

Alliance Jiu Jitsu would like to thank all the BJJ practitioners from all over Ireland and some as far as Manchester for making the trip to Sligo, and big thanks to all the Alliance Sligo team for their continued support. And a special thanks to the magnificent Lucas Lepri for delivering an amazing camp.DSC00792.JPG
